Residential painters for Hampton homes

Hampton is weatherboard country. Edwardian and Californian bungalow weatherboards line the streets between Hampton Street and the beach, alongside interwar brick homes and a steady run of modern family houses replacing post-war stock. The Hampton Street shops, the beach and the station give it a village feel, and the homes are kept accordingly.

Two things work against paint here. The first is the bay. Salt air and westerly rain reach well past Beach Road, and north and west-facing boards take the full coastal UV. The second is the ground. Hampton sits on sandy soils that shift with moisture, so weatherboard homes move more than the same house on clay. Boards open at the joints, nail heads pop, sills crack and unprimed paint lets water into the timber.

DHPainting operates from Kew, about half an hour from Hampton, and years painting in Brisbane's salt air mean coastal-grade timber systems are second nature. We treat weatherboard as a repair job first and a paint job second: fix the movement, seal the timber, then coat it to last.

What we paint in Hampton

The Edwardian and Californian bungalow weatherboards between Hampton Street and Beach Road are the suburb's signature. Original hardwood boards, timber windows, fretwork and verandah posts all need the same discipline: remove failed coatings, replace rotten boards and sills, punch and fill nail heads, prime bare timber, and finish with premium exterior acrylics that flex with the boards.

Towards Ludstone Street, Bluff Road and the Highett side, interwar and post-war brick homes give way to contemporary two-storey rebuilds in render, cement sheet and timber cladding. These need clean modern finishes inside and an exterior system that outlasts the builder's coat.

Heritage overlays and coastal timber care in Hampton

Hampton is in the City of Bayside, and heritage overlays here are relatively few, covering some individual homes and small groups near the older centre. Repainting a surface that is already painted does not normally need a permit. Painting previously unpainted brick, stone or render inside an overlay usually does, and we can check whether your home is affected before quoting.

For most Hampton owners the real question is how to keep weatherboard looking good near the bay. We prime every bare patch, seal end grain and joints, and use premium Taubmans exterior acrylics that stay flexible as the boards move. Rendered and brick homes get Taubmans membrane systems. A well-prepared weatherboard exterior should give eight to ten years here, and a wash-down every year or two to remove salt makes a real difference.

Painting in Hampton: common questions

Why do the weatherboards on my Hampton home keep cracking at the joints?

Sandy soil and coastal moisture swings make the boards and frame move more than in most of Melbourne. If the boards were painted without priming the end grain and joints, water gets in and the movement cracks the film. We seal joints, prime bare timber properly and use flexible acrylics so the coating moves with the house.

Can you replace rotten weatherboards before painting?

Yes. Our team replaces individual boards, sills and trims as part of the preparation, matching the profile of the original timber. It is quoted per board so you only pay for what is needed, and it is far cheaper than leaving rot to spread into the frame.

How much does it cost to paint a weatherboard house in Hampton?

It depends on the size of the home, how many boards need replacing and how much old coating must come off. A tidy single-storey bungalow prices differently to one with rotten sills and peeling oil-based paint. Our cost breakdown page explains how each stage is priced, and every quote we provide is itemised and fixed.

Which finish lasts longest near Hampton Beach?

On timber, a premium exterior acrylic over a proper primer. Acrylics stay flexible and handle UV better than old oil-based enamels, which go brittle and crack as the boards move. Lighter colours on north and west walls fade and chalk more slowly. For decks and screens we recommend penetrating oils or stains that re-coat without stripping.
