Painters in St Kilda
Coastal-grade painting for St Kilda's terraces, mansions and apartment blocks, from the Esplanade to Carlisle Street.
Residential painters for St Kilda homes
St Kilda has more painted surface per street than almost anywhere else we work. Boom-era terraces and mansions climb St Kilda Hill above Fitzroy Street, and interwar and art deco apartment blocks line the Esplanade, Acland Street and Barkly Street. Nearly all of it faces weather off Port Phillip Bay, and all of it has been painted and patched for over a century.
That mix of age and exposure is what separates painting in St Kilda from painting in Kew. Salt carried on the sea breeze settles on render and steel and pulls moisture into the surface. Wind-driven rain finds every crack in a parapet. North and west facades on the foreshore take the full afternoon sun, so coatings chalk and fade faster than they do a few kilometres inland.
DHPainting started in Brisbane in 2009, where salt air and harsh sun are the norm, so coastal-grade exterior systems are second nature to us. We now operate from Kew, roughly half an hour from St Kilda, and our estimator can usually be on site within a few days to walk the property with you.
What we paint in St Kilda
The Victorian terraces and mansions around St Kilda Hill, Grey Street and Robe Street were built from soft brick under lime render, with cast iron lacework, timber sash windows and slate or iron roofs. Many were carved into flats last century, and the exteriors show it: layers of mismatched coatings, patched render and rusting balustrades. We strip what is failing, treat exposed steel, repair render and reset the surface before any top coat goes on.
The art deco and interwar blocks along the Esplanade, Acland Street and the streets behind Luna Park are a different job. Rendered and painted brick facades, curved balconies, steel-framed windows and flat parapets all hold water and salt. Most are run by an owners corporation, so we scope the building as a whole, prepare a specification the committee can circulate, and stage the work around residents, parking and access.
- Victorian terraces and boom-era mansions on St Kilda Hill and around Grey Street
- Art deco and interwar apartment blocks along the Esplanade, Acland Street and Barkly Street
- Edwardian and Federation homes towards Alma Road and Carlisle Street
- Converted mansions and 1960s walk-up flats off Fitzroy Street
- Contemporary apartments and townhouses along Marine Parade and the Fitzroy Street edge
Heritage overlays and Port Phillip requirements
Much of St Kilda sits inside heritage overlays under the Port Phillip Planning Scheme, including St Kilda Hill and the foreshore precincts. Repainting a surface that is already painted does not normally need a permit. Painting previously unpainted brick, stone or render usually does, and individually significant buildings can carry controls on colour as well. We can tell you which applies to your property and point you to the right people at the City of Port Phillip before work starts.
Colour is where St Kilda gets interesting. Victorian terraces suit deep, layered heritage schemes. Art deco blocks were usually painted in pale, chalky tones with a single accent on fins and balcony edges. We can match original colours from paint scrapes, work from the Taubmans heritage range, or help an owners corporation settle on a scheme the whole committee can agree on.

Our painting services in St Kilda
Our St Kilda work splits fairly evenly between period houses and apartment buildings. For houses, that means full interior and exterior repaints, single-room refreshes and heritage detail work. For apartment blocks, it means facades, balconies, stairwells and common areas, with an itemised fixed-price quote within three to five business days of inspection and a specification document your committee can review.
- Exterior repaints of render, brick, weatherboard and steel in a salt-air environment
- Owners-corporation and body corporate projects: facades, common areas, balconies and carparks
- Heritage detail work: lacework, fretwork, sash windows and verandah timbers
- Interior painting of apartments, terraces and converted mansions
- Render, plaster and rust repairs before painting

Painting in St Kilda: common questions
Does salt air change how you paint in St Kilda?
Yes. Salt sits on surfaces as a fine film and draws moisture, so we wash every exterior down before sanding and priming. Steel balustrades and window frames get rust treatment and a proper metal primer. On render and masonry we specify Taubmans membrane systems, which flex and shed water rather than cracking when the substrate moves.
Can you work with our owners corporation on an apartment block in St Kilda?
Yes, and a large share of our St Kilda work is exactly that. We inspect the whole building, prepare a written specification covering preparation, products, colours and staging, and can attend a committee meeting to talk it through. Once approved, we agree access windows with residents and your manager and keep common areas usable throughout.
How much does it cost to paint a house or apartment block in St Kilda?
It depends on size, access and how much of the existing coating has failed. A two-storey terrace with rusted lacework and blown render sits in a different bracket to a tidy Edwardian. Our cost breakdown page explains how we price each stage, and every quote is itemised and fixed.
How do you manage parking and access near Fitzroy Street and Acland Street?
We plan it before day one. Our estimator notes parking restrictions, laneway access and footpath traffic during the inspection, and we arrange council permits where scaffolding or a work zone is needed. Ladders, towers and materials are packed away each afternoon so footpaths, shopfronts and neighbours are not left working around us.
