Painters in Richmond
Durable, sharp finishes for Richmond's terraces, cottages, warehouse conversions and townhouses.
Residential painters for Richmond homes
Richmond mixes more eras of building than any other suburb we work in. Victorian terraces and single-fronted workers cottages run up Richmond Hill and through the streets between Bridge Road, Swan Street and Church Street. Former factories and warehouses towards the Yarra and around Cremorne have become apartments and offices, and new townhouses fill in the gaps between them all.
It is also a hard-working suburb. Homes here sit close to busy roads, trams, cafes and each other, and finishes cop traffic grime, knocks and constant use in a way that quieter suburbs do not. We specify tougher, washable coatings for Richmond interiors and exteriors, while still doing the careful preparation that 140-year-old render, timber and plaster demand.
DHPainting Melbourne is family owned and operates from Kew, about ten to fifteen minutes up the river. We started in Brisbane in 2009 and have built the Melbourne team around inner-suburban work like this: tight sites, mixed substrates, neighbours a wall away and clients who want the job done cleanly and on schedule.

What we paint in Richmond
Richmond's Victorian terraces are mostly single and double-fronted, with rendered or face brick facades, cast iron lacework, timber sash windows and parapets carrying many generations of paint. Workers cottages in timber and brick fill the smaller streets around Richmond Hill, Lennox Street and Church Street, and many still have original weatherboards and verandah posts under thick old coatings. Preparation on these houses means stripping failed paint, repairing render and lath and plaster, re-puttying sashes and dealing safely with lead-based paint where it turns up.
Warehouse conversions around Cremorne, Church Street and the river edge bring exposed brick, steel trusses, high plasterboard ceilings and concrete floors, where the finish has to be crisp and the access is often at height. New townhouses across the suburb add acrylic render, fibre cement and timber cladding, plus interiors that need flat, hard-wearing walls in high-traffic layouts. We match products and preparation to each.
- Victorian terraces between Bridge Road, Swan Street and Church Street
- Timber and brick workers cottages around Richmond Hill and Lennox Street
- Warehouse and factory conversions towards Cremorne and the Yarra
- Contemporary townhouses and apartments filling in across the suburb
- Shop-top residences and mixed-use buildings along Bridge Road, Swan Street and Victoria Street
Heritage overlays and Yarra requirements
Richmond sits in the City of Yarra, which applies heritage overlays across most of the older residential streets and many of the former industrial buildings. Repainting a surface that is already painted does not normally need a permit. Painting previously unpainted brick, stone or render inside an overlay usually does, and Yarra takes a firm view on painting over original face brick on terraces and warehouses. We can check your property against the Yarra Planning Scheme and advise before any work is booked.
Colour on Richmond terraces is a streetscape decision as much as a personal one, because the neighbours are a wall away on each side. We can match original schemes from paint scrapes, work from the Taubmans heritage range or help you choose a modern palette that holds its own beside the neighbours. Warehouse interiors give much more freedom, and we can advise on finishes that suit exposed brick and steel.

Painting in Richmond: common questions
Can you paint a warehouse conversion with very high ceilings?
Yes. Warehouse interiors around Cremorne and Church Street often run to five or six metres with exposed trusses and brick. We use mobile towers and, where the space allows, small platform lifts rather than ladders, sheet the floors fully and plan the sequence so the space stays usable for as long as possible.
How do you handle a terrace that shares walls with both neighbours?
We work from the footpath at the front, with barriers and any council permit required, and from the rear yard or laneway behind. We let both neighbours know the program before we start, and if a party wall or shared parapet needs work we agree the approach with them in writing first.
What finishes hold up best in a busy Richmond household?
For interiors we normally specify a washable low-sheen acrylic on walls and a hard-wearing enamel on doors, skirtings and architraves so scuffs wipe off. On exteriors near busy roads we use premium Taubmans systems that resist grime and wash down easily. Our estimator will recommend the right system for each surface.
How much does it cost to paint a house in Richmond?
A single-fronted cottage in fair condition and a double-storey terrace with failing render, lacework and lath and plaster inside are very different jobs, and surface condition drives most of the cost. Our cost breakdown page explains how we price each stage, and every quote we send is itemised and fixed after inspection.
