Residential painters for Kew East homes
Kew East is the suburb next door to our office. Follow High Street east from Kew Junction and you are there in minutes. The suburb runs from Burke Road across to the Yarra parklands and Hays Paddock, and its quiet streets have a more relaxed, family feel than the grander parts of Kew.
Kew East was developed later than Kew proper, mostly between the 1920s and the early 1960s. Interwar clinker brick homes and Californian bungalows sit around Harp Road and High Street, with 1930s and 1940s weatherboards towards Kilby Road, Hays Paddock and the golf courses. Post-war cream brick fills the remaining streets, and a growing number of blocks have been rebuilt or extended.
It is honest, practical housing and it suits honest, practical painting: thorough preparation of weatherboards, windows, eaves and render, sensible colours, and products that hold up around active families. Our estimator scopes every Kew East job on site.
What we paint in Kew East
Weatherboard homes are more common in Kew East than in most of Boroondara, and they are where preparation matters most. Boards repainted every decade since the 1930s carry a thick build-up that cracks and lifts, so we wash, scrape and sand back to a sound edge, spot-prime bare timber, fill flush, and replace boards too far gone to save. On the interwar brick homes the work concentrates on rendered gables, chimneys and porches, timber eaves and window frames, with the clinker brick left unpainted.
The post-war cream brick homes towards Kilby Road and the newer rebuilds bring painted eaves and fascias, steel windows and, on the newer houses, large rendered facades and fibre cement. Interiors across all three eras are mostly set plaster, and our plasterer deals with cracked cornices and patched ceilings before painting starts.

Heritage overlays and Boroondara requirements in Kew East
Kew East is in the City of Boroondara, and while its heritage overlay coverage is lighter than Kew's, several interwar streets and individual homes are protected. If your home is in an overlay, repainting surfaces that are already painted does not normally need a permit. Painting brick, stone or render that has never been painted usually does, worth knowing before you paint the clinker brick on a 1930s home. We can check your property and advise before work begins.
Council or not, these homes look best when the colours suit the era. Deeper greens, creams and warm greys work well against clinker brick, and a well-chosen trim colour can lift a post-war frontage without fighting the brick.

Painting in Kew East: common questions
How quickly can you inspect a house in Kew East?
Usually within a few days. Kew East is the closest suburb to our Edgecombe Street office, so an estimator can often call in on the way to or from another job. Once we have inspected, you receive an itemised fixed-price quote within three to five business days.
My Kew East weatherboards have thick, cracking paint. Do they need to be stripped?
Not always. Where the old paint is well bonded we sand and feather the edges, prime and fill, and the finish will be sound. Where the build-up is lifting in sheets or the timber is damaged, we strip those areas back or replace boards. The quote states which approach applies.
What does it cost to paint a weatherboard house in Kew East?
Cost is driven mainly by the timber's condition and repairs, then by height, access and trim detail. A single-storey home with sound boards is a very different job from one that needs stripping and replacement. Our cost breakdown page explains how each stage is priced, and every quote is itemised and fixed.
Does Kew East have the same heritage rules as Kew?
Same council, the City of Boroondara, but far fewer overlays, since most of Kew East was built between the wars and after. If yours is, repainting existing painted surfaces normally needs no permit, but painting unpainted clinker brick or render usually does. We can check your address before you choose a scheme.
